Overview

Problem: Using MDRP can be tedious

Mac DVDRipper Pro (MDRP) provides a variety of DVD backup features, including the ability to easily copy (or "rip") a DVD to your Mac's hard drive (or SSD). While it's a great app, MDRP can become tedious to use:

  1. Insert a DVD into your optical drive. By default, OS X automatically opens DVD Player, which starts playing the DVD.
  2. Quit DVD Player (because MDRP doesn't want interference from DVD Player).
  3. Open MDRP to rip the DVD to your Mac (or perform another MDRP action).

If you wish to rip several DVDs, you must repeat those 3 steps for each DVD. Alternatively, you can simpifly the process, by telling your Mac to automatically open MDRP instead of DVD Player:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Select the CDs & DVDs panel.
  3. Change the When you insert a Video DVD option to Open another application....
  4. In the resulting Open dialog, navigate to your Applications folder and select the MDRP app.

When you're finished ripping DVDs, you must repeat the System Preferences steps to reestablish DVD Player as the default Video DVD app.

It doesn't take long for these multiple steps to become quite tedious.

Solution: MDRP Helpers

The two MDRP Helper apps replace these tedious configuration steps with single actions:

See the "Usage" section below for more information.

Requirements

Installation

  1. Download MDRPHelpers1.0.dmg.
  2. Mount the disk image if your browser does not do it automatically. The installation folder should open automatically.
  3. Drag the Open DVD Player & Open MDRP apps and drop them on the Applications folder alias.
  4. [Optional] For easy use, drag the Open DVD Player and Open MDRP apps from your Applications Folder into your Dock.

Usage

Open MDRP

Launching the Open MDRP app does the following:

  1. Set the When you insert a Video DVD option to Open MDRP.
  2. Hide System Preferences.
  3. Quit DVD Player, if it's running.
  4. Open MDRP.

Open MDRP can be used either (1) in preparation for ripping one or more DVDs, or (2) after you've inserted a DVD, and OS X has opened DVD Player.

Open DVD Player

Launching the Open DVD Player app does the following:

  1. Set the When you insert a Video DVD option to Open DVD Player.
  2. Hide System Preferences.
  3. Quit MDRP, if it's running.
  4. Open DVD Player.

Open DVD Player can be used either (1) in preparation for watching a DVD, or (2) after you've inserted a DVD, and OS X has opened MDRP.
